“I Know” Jay Paul Deratany Commercial Spot

Deratany has identified rising property taxes as a symptom of the ongoing Berrios-Stroger cronyism issue plaguing county government. Deratany has declared that Cook County taxpayers have had enough and deserve an advocate who will fight tirelessly on their behalf. “We have to stop giving breaks to downtown corporations, giving them a $22 million tax break, while denying a $400 tax break to homeowners,” said Deratany.

Deratany said he’s running to provide a voice for seniors and homeowners who are being squeezed by rising property taxes, adding that “we need commissioners on the Board of Review who will advocate for those who can’t afford insider lobbyists and big law firms.”

Deratany is calling for transparency in county government and a full overhaul of the tax system that is currently in place, “As chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party, Berrios has put politics ahead of the interests of county taxpayers. He helped engineer the nomination of county board president Todd Stroger, who’s now demanding billions in new taxes while failing to cut patronage and waste. It is time to put people ahead of politics in Cook County.”

Deratany’s candidacy is supported by Cook County Assessor James Houlihan, who has led the fight to cap property tax reassessments at 7% a year, along with U.S. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Cook County Commissioners Forrest Claypool, Mike Quigley and Larry Suffredin. Deratany is endorsed by the Democratic Party of Evanston, the Independent Voters of Illinois and Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO), Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen, the 49th Ward Democratic Organization, and the Villages of Lincolnwood and Morton Grove.

Deratany, 45, is a trial attorney who has successfully represented average citizens against big corporations and insurance companies for nearly 20 years. He’s been active in numerous environmental and human rights organizations and currently serves on the board of directors of Chicago House. He’s provided pro bono legal services for Community Support Services, and won that organization’s prestigious Ekroth Award for helping children and adults with developmental disabilities.
